Biodegradable agricultural film does not break down, does not feed the soil with extra nutrients, but instead pollutes the soil and contaminates our food with microplastics.  Research by Wageningen University Research (WUR) commissioned by the Plastic Soup Foundation shows agricultural land in the Netherlands and Spain to be seriously polluted with microplastics from biodegradable agricultural film. Despite claims that these films would break down 90% within 2 years. These microplastics end up in our food via soil and surface water and threaten our health. Dr. Esperanza Huerta Lwanga, researcher at Wageningen University: ‘Biodegradable plant-based mulches were specifically developed to quickly degrade in soil. However this study indicates that these biodegradability claims are open to serious question’ LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD!Biodegradable agricultural film is not a good alternative to standard agricultural film. Plastic Soup Foundation advocates for a change in system and mindset, using alternatives such as paper or waste streams from wool production instead of plastics. Therefore, sign our statement of support. With your help, we will appeal to the European Union about their responsibility in revising the EU Fertiliser Regulation that includes the use of this agricultural film. The more people make their voices heard, the stronger our position in the European Union.Join us too>>
